Vintage Franklin Quest Two Tone Planner!

So I did it again - bought another binder from eBay!  No surprise there, right?  Actually I was a little surprised when I received it as I bought it primarily for the Gold 1.25" rings (removable) which I planned on using in my Franklin Covey Boston.  Imagine my surprise when I received this binder and fell in love with it.

It is a vintage Compact (same ring configuration as a Filofax Personal) sized binder with the Franklin Quest logo (Franklin Quest pre-dated the current Franklin Covey).  Franklin Quest binders are from the era of 1992-1997 - I really have no idea when this was manufactured, it did have some inserts dated 1993, but those could have easily been added by the previous owner.  You can read more about Franklin Covey's History by clicking here.  In any case it is at least 17 years old and possibly as old as 21-22 years old.  Oh and the best deal of all is that I got it for less than $14 US dollars and part of that price was shipping!

Here's a peek:
Front Cover.  I added the pencil so you could get a true idea of the color.  The photo shows pretty true to the actual
color which is Navy Blue with a Deep Tan trim.  The tan trim is almost the exact same color as a Filofax Ochre Malden.

Back Side - notice the exterior zip pocket - I use my planner as a wallet so this is a perfect place to keep my
Debit Card, which allows me to keep my binder closed for simple purchases.

The wristlet handle is completely removable - I just love the antique Gold hardware.
Inside Left:  plenty of room for cards with a zip pocket behind them and as a bonus there is a
gusseted pocket behind the zip pocket as shown in the next picture.  The first of two pen loops
is also on the left.  I have a Frixion Clicker pen in the loop, but it is large enough to accommodate
a larger pen if needed.

Generous sized gusseted pocket behind the zip pocket.

Back Side:  Features two slip pockets, the topmost one is tall enough to secure a note pad.  Notice the generous
sized pen loop which sports my four barrel Frixion Pen.

Leather Stamp:  it is really hard to photo this, but it says Verona Leather/Aniline Trim on the
first line and the second line has the product number followed by Made in USA.

Love, Love, Love this Gold hardware.  Shown here is the zipper pull with the Franklin Quest
logo, also note the hex head screw in the rings - this is what makes Franklin Quest/Covey
binders stand out from all the rest - 90% of their binders have rings that can be removed and
swapped out with smaller, larger or different rings.  Keep in mind that most of their economy
binders (365 Line) have riveted in screws which cannot be swapped out and some of their Luxury
Line binders also have riveted in rings, so if the ability to change rings is important always ask
for a close up picture of the rings before purchasing.
Thank you for visiting today and I hope you enjoyed looking at my newest beauty!  Check back soon as a have another semi-vintage Cream colored Franklin Covey binder en route to me now and I will be posting pics of it soon!

Current Love - Franklin Covey Boston!

So if you have followed me for any length of time you know that I switch planners faster than I switch purses, but the inserts usually stay almost the same.  I received my new Franklin Covey Compact and thought you might like to see how she is set up.  She is decked out for Christmas and also has a Black, Gold and Teal theme going on.
The rings come standard at 1", but I have swapped them out to 1.25" rings.

Also just as a little side note.  I did an experiment last night to see if I could fit all of the same "planner guts" into my personal Filofax Malden and what do you know?  Everything fit except for the three pens (I had to trim it down to just two).  I also did not use the clear zip pouch as the Malden has a zip pocket that I transferred everything into.  Although everything fit and I was able to close it, turning pages was definitely much tighter in the Malden.  I have zero problems with turning the pages in the Boston now that it has the 1.25" rings.

This is my "Everyday Carry" - the Franklin Covey Compact Boston, Pens & the
Teal pouch has various planner bits (scissors, hole punch, tape runner, etc.)

I added a ring so that I could easily attach my charm.

I do use my planner as my wallet - credit cards are in the front for easy access,
receipts are behind in the secretarial pocket.

Side Tab - I only use three now.  The First tab is Me, Second
Tab is Calendar and Last Tab is my A-Z Catchall.

My zip pouch only has a bit of change - it is mainly my Emergency Essentials
(Ibuprofen, allergy medicine, a couple of safety pins, etc.).

My calendar section includes a month on two pages - I noted with holidays,
birthdays, events and appointments.  These are my current DIY daily pages
which include my daily details.  Once they are filled out they include everything
I need to get through the day.  My bookmark is not shown, but on it I place a
weekly task sheet for those tasks that don't have a specific time, but need to
be done at some point during the week.

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed my "Show -n- Tell".

The Small Rings are Cramping My Style!

I think I can speak for quite a large majority when I say that the standard size rings that the Personal Size Filofax has are just too small!  However, I love the small footprint of the binders themselves, but not the small writing space.  What a quandary!

Once again I have moved into one of my Franklin Covey Compacts and I have a new Franklin Covey Compact Boston on it's way to me.  The rings on both the Boston and the one I moved into are just a tad over 1" (30mm).  I can fit just a few more pages in my Franklin Covey than what I could in my Filofax - plus the pages turn easily now.

Dilemma #1 resolved, now onto Dilemma #2....
Franklin Covey Compact pages have the same ring configuration as Personal size Filofax, but the Franklin Covey binders are designed to accommodate their inserts which are .50" (yep, a half of an inch) wider than than a "standard" size personal insert.  Well, waste not, want not - right?  So if I have the room I am going to use it!

As of this week I am trying a week on two pages to see if I can make it work for me (instead of the day on one page I was using).  First, I tried the standard horizontal seemed to be working fine, but then I had someone in one of my Facebook Groups ask about a vertical layout and I remembered doing one of those about a year ago for my A5 aka Franklin Covey Classic size planner.  With a just a little bit of manipulation I managed to down size the insert into a Franklin Covey Compact Size and I think I am going to like this....

As always I like to share what I have created (free for your personal use)!  These are designed to print on standard 8.5" x 11" paper in "portrait" mode.  No need to change anything on your printer - just make sure it is set to print actual size.  Depending on your printer you may need to set it to "fit your printer margins".  Once you have as many printed as you want, turn the pages over and feed back into your printer to print on the back side.  Once you are done printing then you can cut your paper and hole punch.  Here is the link to the FREE .pdf printable:

I would love to hear from you if you decide to use these!

My Malden is Wonderful But......

I love my Filofax Personal Malden, but let's face it - there are just some things it cannot do!  Like get bigger rings!  Now that Halloween is over it was time to put my planner into Holiday mode - which meant more lists, a Christmas Section and of course everything had to go into a RED planner!

Out with the Filofax and in with the Franklin Covey!  With it's big 1.25" rings and plenty of pockets, I was able to get everything that I needed into my planner to help make my holiday planning a breeze.  Of course it is wonderful that she is so festive to look at - it puts me right into the holiday spirit!

I love to plan, but it just seems like that much more FUN when it's in such a pretty, decked out holiday planner!  Take care and happy planning ♥
